We like living in comfort.
- Having a good job which provides enough money, medical insurance, and a retirement income
- Respectful and responsible children
- A nice home and a good-running car
- Limited stress
- A healthy family
The list is endless. But those things are often in short supply, and our comfort can easily get chipped away by an accident or tragedy, a layoff or extended hospital stay, rebellious children or a natural disaster that wipes out everything we own. When those things come your way, and they will, how do you respond? What do you do? Where do you turn?
Remember that “...all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
- This verse doesn’t promise that you won’t lose your job, but that God will work it out for your good.
- This verse doesn’t promise that you won’t have a car accident, but that God will work it out for your good.
- This verse doesn’t promise that you won’t suffer the loss of a child or spouse, but that God will work it out for your good.
- This verse doesn’t promise that you won’t lose your home to a flood or fire, but that God will work it out for your good.
- This verse doesn’t promise that you or a well-loved family member won’t be diagnosed with cancer, but that God will work it out for your good.
Regardless of the challenge you’re facing right now, remember that God can and will work it out for your good if you “are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
“…To them who are the called according to his purpose?” Now, what does that mean?
That means that you are doing everything you know God would have you to do. We can’t live foolishly and expect God to work out our stupidity for our good. That’s why that verse adds the condition “…to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
It’s not God’s purpose for you to drink and drive or take illegal drugs or engage in any type of ungodly activities. God never promises to work out for good the problems that arise due to choices that we make while living outside of a holy lifestyle, and we’re all called to live a holy lifestyle. What challenges are you facing today? Are you living a life “according to His purpose?”
