We understand the Word of God to be the Bible. To mankind, “word” means something spoken or written. We fill books and magazines with the words of men. We fill the air with the words we speak. We see a word as nothing more than a means of communication. And the Holy Scriptures is the written Word of God, bound by a cover. We refer to it as the Holy Bible. Hence, the Bible is the written Word of God. All Christians know that the word “Holy” means the Bible is set above all other printed material and is to be revered. Yet, have you considered how much more there is to the Word of God than His Holy Scriptures?
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Jesus is the Word that was with God in the beginning. We know that because verse 14 says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” That was Jesus.
I John 5:7 says, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” Jesus is again called the Word. “And these three are one” indicates that God the Father and the Holy Ghost are also the Word. However, in John 10:30, Jesus professed Himself to be God when He said, “I and my Father are one.”
And we are all familiar with John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
We know that it says that God gave His Son that we might be saved. But do you realize that I John 3:16 says that God died for us Himself?
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” (I John 3:16)
Since the Bible refers to Jesus as the Word and declares Him to be God, then the Word of God includes God’s written Word (the Holy Scriptures), God’s spoken Word, and all three persons of the trinity. Therefore, the Word of God refers to more than God’s words, but to Christ, who is God Himself.
Referring to our Savior, Revelation 19:13 says, “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”
