That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.
Ephesians 1:17 KJV
Paul encourages the Ephesian believers by letting them know that they are in his prayers.
In verses 15 & 16, he says, “Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;” What is his prayer for them? “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:”
When you are saved, the Holy Spirit of God comes to live inside you.
Romans 8:14 & 16 say, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God…The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”
And if God’s children choose to live a Spirit-filled life, they allow the Holy Spirit to control their attitudes, their actions, their words, their lives. That is the Spirit of wisdom, which reveals to us the knowledge of Christ.
God desires to bless each of His children with the Spirit of divine wisdom and reveal to them the knowledge of His Son Jesus. So verses 18-23 follow up verse 17 with knowledge of Christ.
- Verse 18…God gives us spiritual insight to understand the expectation of His calling and the glorious riches of His inheritance in the saints…
- Verse 19…God reveals His tremendous power to those who believe, according to the working of His mighty power…
- Verse 20…Which He used to raise Christ from the dead. Then God set Jesus at His right hand in the heavenly places…
- Verse 21…Those places are “Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come…”
Verse 22…God has given Christ authority over everything and made Him head of the church… - Verse 23…The church is the body of Christ, who fills it completely.
Without the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, a person would miss valuable insight from God’s Word which reveal that knowledge.
