Although our nation was clearly founded on God and godly principles, our nation as a whole refuses to acknowledge it. Today’s society can deny the facts and attempt to rewrite history, but their lies will never change the truth. While touring old historic Jamestowne, we paused at the site of an old church and read the plaque that was prominently displayed at the entrance. It said that the church had burned down and the governor ordered it to be rebuilt. In fact, that church had been destroyed by fire three or four times and every time the governor ordered it to be rebuilt.
In one of the visitor centers, we watched a video that expounded on the intense hardships of the colonists, told by a number of different people, each expressing the difficulties from his point of view. There was the narrator’s voice, then the voices of an American Indian, An African slave, and a colonist, each sharing the hardships they endured in the new land. But the voice of the preacher had been silenced. Since the video was close captioned (displaying the words on the screen) I noticed that his lines, most of which contained Bible scripture from the King James version, weren’t read as they flashed silently onto the screen moments before the video changed scenes.
In another gift shop, I found a magnet with Abraham Lincoln, who was quoted on the magnet saying “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.” But the principle originated with Jesus when He said to the Pharisees in Mark 3:24-25, “And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”
And how many other great men down through the history of our nation, which God has blessed time and time again, have quoted the Holy Scriptures. People like to hear those profound words of wisdom, but they do not want to acknowledge God or recognize the wisdom of His Word. It’s much more comfortable to attribute God’s words to a man because then they don’t have to acknowledge God.
