Verses of the Week: Matthew 7:24-25 “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
Encouraging Thought: The foundation is critical. Without a good foundation, the structure will eventually collapse. Jesus is the foundation of our faith. Psalm 18:31 says, “For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?” Jesus is that Rock. And whosoever builds His faith on a foundation as solid as the Rock will be able to withstand the storms of life.
- The rains will descend – problems will fall on us.
- The floods will come – disasters might threaten to overwhelm us.
- The winds will blow – others might mock our faith
Those storms will rock your boat, but your faith will stand firm if your foundation is solid.
Words of Wisdom: Colossians 2:2b-3 says, “…to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” If all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in God the Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ, shouldn’t we be receptive students, ready to listen and willing to obey His every Word? How could we possibly go wrong if God’s Word has all the wisdom and knowledge we could ever want or need?
Jesus said, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:” That tells us that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are revealed to us through His Word; not just His spoken word from His time on Earth, but His written Word. So Jesus, then, is referring to God’s Word. James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” In other words, if you obey God’s Word, Jesus says it is the equivalent of a wise man who built his house upon a rock and when the storms came, his house survived. And James says that if you know what God says and don’t do it, you’re deceiving yourself.
